Cirrus HPC Early Access Opportunity

Cirrus, based at EPCC, is one of the new EPSRC-funded Tier-2 HPC facilities. EPCC are offering an opportunity for early access to the facility. A total of 11 million core hours are available through Early Access with resources to be used before 1 October 2017.

To take advantage of this opportunity you will need to complete a short form detailing the resources you are requesting and providing a brief description of the work you plan to undertake. The technical requirements will be assessed by the Cirrus team and, if successful, access will be granted. Allocations will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis until all available resource has been allocated.

We reserve the right to adjust award allocations to ensure that resources are shared equitably between different applicants.

Details of the process and the application form can be found at the access webpages for Cirrus.

Cirrus is a 280 node HPE/SGI ICE XA cluster. Each node has two 18-core 2.1 GHz Intel Xeon E5-2695 (Broadwell) series processors and 256 GB memory. The nodes are connected by FDR Infiniband network in a hypercube topology. Further information on Cirrus can be found on the Cirrus website.

Webinar: Version Control,Arno Proeme, EPCC
Wednesday 19th July 1500 BST

Version control tools such as Git and SVN allow us to track changes made over time to files like source code and scripts, including by different people, and to merge these changes in a systematic way. They are therefore an invaluable tool for software development and related workflows. This virtual tutorial will explain the main models underlying a wide range of version control tools and will illustrate these through live demonstrations using Git and SVN.

This tutorial should prove useful to researchers already using a version control tool but uncertain of the underlying model and therefore occasionally unsure of what the tool is doing or how to get it to do what they want, as well as to researchers who are trying to decide which version control tool to choose to use in the first place to fit their needs. It should also be of interest to those who are simply trying to get a better general understanding of version control systems.
