End of ARCHER Service

Dear ARCHER Users,

As detailed in the UKRI message yesterday, the ARCHER Service will end on Wednesday 27th January.

ARCHER will be shut down and the decommissioning process to physically remove ARCHER from the Advanced Computing Facility (ACF) will begin on Wednesday 27th January.

No data will be able to be retrieved from ARCHER from Wednesday 27th January.

All UKRI ARCHER Projects with an active allocation have now been created on ARCHER2 and PIs and Projects members have been notified. Instructions on how to apply for an account have been sent out.

ARCHER /home Data

At the end of the ARCHER Service, a copy of the ARCHER /home filesystem will be taken and placed on ARCHER2.

ARCHER2 users will be able to retrieve their /home data from this location and move it to their home space on ARCHER2 if required. To do this, you must have the correct permissions and we advise that your ARCHER and ARCHER2 usernames match to allow this seamless transfer. However, you are also able to transfer /home data, yourself, while ARCHER remains available.

The ARCHER2 /home quota has been set to the the same as the ARCHER /home quota.

If your project is not moving to ARCHER2, then you are responsible for the transfer of any data that you wish to keep.

ARCHER /work Data

Users are responsible for the transfer of any ARCHER /work data that they wish to keep.

ARCHER /work will be decommissioned on the 27th January and all data will be unavailable after this date.

The ARCHER2 /work quota has been set to be 50% of the ARCHER /work quota.

We do not have the full ARCHER2 /work filesystem available for the 4-Cabinet Service as the majority of the ARCHER2 /work filesystem will be installed with the remaining 19 Cabinets. This means that we need to restrict the /work disk quota initially while we wait for the full filesystem to arrive.

Data Transfer

There is an ARCHER->ARCHER2 section on the ARCHER2 website that covers migrating accounts, data and the main differences between ARCHER and ARCHER2. This section can be found at: https://docs.archer2.ac.uk/archer-migration/

If you are not migrating to ARCHER2, there is a general Data Management Guide, which can be found at: https://www.archer.ac.uk/documentation/data-management/

If you are the PI of a UKRI project and expect your project to move to ARCHER2 and have not received a message regarding your project, please contact the Service Desk: support@archer2.ac.uk.

We will be in touch with further reminders and advice but we do ask that you move data in a timely manner and that you only move required data to ARCHER2.

Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns about the end of the ARCHER service, support@archer.ac.uk

Regards,
Jo
